Labrador Retrievers are gun dogs also used for a variety of activities such as field trials, narcotic and bomb detection, rescuing, guiding the handicapped, etc. These dogs are good with children and other dogs. Labradors are excellent swimmers and travel companions. They are hard working, intelligent and sociable. An owner's approval is enough to make this dog happy. So is a little snack.
Labradors are medium-sized strong dogs with a smooth gait and a short water-resistant coat. It is long with an undercoat, which protects the dog from cold. Its broad back skull, powerful jaws and a strong neck are meant to help the dog carry game in the mouth. The tail is well set on.

The breed does not owe its name to Labrador. The ancestor of the breed was used in Canada as a human companion during hunting and fishing. It helped Canadian fishermen in all varieties of activities. That black dog also called Newfoundland or St. John's Dog, almost perished at the turn of the 18th century. Happily enough, English dog fanciers bred it to other Retrievers and improved the breed. Labrador Retrievers not only survived but also acquired a great popularity in Great Britain and US.
